Mayday Mayday: Invasion of the Climate Snatchers...

Mayday poster - based on 1950s B Movie poster1st May 2008 - A Day of Climate Action, everywhere

As climate change rises up the political agenda, a huge number of techno-fixes are forming a new economic sector: from biofuels to nuclear power, carbon-trading to hydrogen fuel cells, dumping urine in the ocean to carbon capture and storage. Everywhere corporations are seeking the elusive elixir which allows us to continue business as usual.

All of these technologies are a distraction from the real solution to the problems we face: a massive reduction in our consumption and the end to economic growth.

On May 1st, international workers day, lets challenge these false solutions to climate chaos and show the real solution: far-reaching social change, and reduction in consumption.

This Day of Action on Climate Change is called by the Network for Climate Action in co-operation with the Rising Tide Network and the Camp for Climate Action.

Please email maydayNO@SPAMdaysofclimateaction.org.uk if you would like further info.

RESOURCES: Lots of information for action/explaining the issues has gone up on our website in the last few days. Check it out and pick your favourite climate red herring: from agrofuels to nuclear power, carbon-trading to hydrogen fuel cells, carbon capture and storage, genetic engineering to nanotechnology. Uncover these techno-fixes for what they are: a distraction from the root cause of climate change and a means to carry on the status quo of endless economic growth and the exploitation of people and planet. There's also a local press release that you can adapt

IDEAS FOR ACTION: Whether you're in a group or whether there's just one or two of you, there are lots of things you can do to raise the vital issues.

TAKE DIRECT ACTION. Occupy the offices of you local carbon offsetting company; Blockade your local biofuels refinery; Visit your local nuclear power station or take your cows and veg to a carbon trader and set up a real market ; Protest at your local University's GM and Nano-tech departments; Protest at your local Tesco petrol station against biofuels

SPREAD THE WORD. Hang banners in public places; Hold talks, workshops and film nights about the issues; Leaflet town on your chosen issue; Free Giveaway stalls; Produce and distribute local-based guide on alternatives to capitalism, co-ops, alternative economies, free shops etc. Co-organise events with union members to discuss the issues around employment and climate change; Write articles and letters for papers and websites.

Climate Camp Speakers' Training

London - Sunday 4th May 10am till 5pm
Manchester Saturday - 17th May 10:30 till 5:30pm.

Contact speakers@climatecamp.org.uk to book your place.

If you like to talk to people about the Climate Camp then we need you to help inspire hundreds of people to come this year and make it the best yet! We want to train people like you to give a quick and easy presentation to your local groups interested in coming to the camp.

No public speaking experience is required as the presentation will be designed so that it's easy to pick up and easy to pass on. All that is required is that you have been to a previous camp. This is a key part of our networking strategy for this year so it's really important that everyone with enthusiasm for the Climate Camp gets involved.

Why are we doing this?
This year we realised that the majority of people who come to the camp come because they know someone involved or they know someone that knows someone coming. We think that having personal contact with someone that seems like a normal person is what makes people come to the camp. Someone that can answer all those little questions like who does the cooking, where do you go to the toilet and what are the police like?

Day of Action on Food and Climate Change

Food Action day poster - people on flying carrots3 June 2008

The Climate Action Day that bites....

The food we eat contributes up to a third of the emissions poisoning the planet. It's time for a detox! Changing our diets is one of the most effective steps we can take.

Our unsustainable appetites are already causing climate change. Now is the time to switch to plant based, organic, seasonal and locally produced food! Climate action starts on your dinner plate, at the supermarket, on your allotment and in your back yard, at the food distribution centres, down on the farm, in your high street, at the airport and the lorry park.

The UN Conference on World Food Security and Climate Change runs from 3rd to 5th June. Whatever your tastes, there's something for everyone on this action menu! Local food markets, free food stalls, workshops and film showings, street theatre, info stalls, protests and direct action, cooking demonstrations, allotment shows. Get creative and get involved!

Local organic food, growing your own, veganism, permaculture, food security, humanitarian issues, agrofuels, transport campaigning, GM food ... make the links on climate change ... take action on the 3rd of June toward a low-carbon diet!

This Day of Action on Climate Change is called by the Network for Climate Action in co-operation with the Rising Tide Network and the Camp for Climate Action.
